Romney made an energy pitch on his campaign run stating that he would make America energy independent by loosening environmental regulations and expanding oil drilling and coal mining efforts. While many are skeptical about the plan being achievable by 2020 Romney stated that it is doable with the help of Mexico and Canada, stressing the "North American" part of the energy plan. Romney's plan would also rely on coastal drilling off of Virginia and the Carolinas. Obama has critical the plan saying Romney would be prioritizing tax breaks for Big Oil, which have donated heavily to the Romney campaign. A democratic campaign spokesperson quoted that the "scheme" is irresponsible and will only further Americas decline to China as being a leader in renewable energy while "lining the pockets of big oil".
