Internal Polls That Caused Romney's High Hopes

The New Republic - 11/30/2012

As an exclusive to The New Republic, a Romney aide has provided the campaign's internal polling that caused the Romey campaign to believe it would win. The campaign polled daily, then combined the results into two day averages.

One chart the aide obtained from Romney campaign's chief pollster, Neil Newhouse, shows Romney believed he would win by at least 48 percent to Obama's presumed 45.5 percent in Colorado. On Election Day, Obama claimed 51.5 percent and Romney won over 46.1 percent of Colorado's voters. Internal poll results for Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Iowa, and New Hampshire were also far off the mark:

IA: Iowa was believed to be a toss-up, with a tie at 46.5 percent.

WI, PA, and MN: Internal polls showed Obama in the lead, but underestimated his winning margin.

NH: Estimated Romney would win 48.5 percent to 45 percent.
